16 Interior Design Rules Every Interior Designer Should Follow

interior design advice

“In your home, natural light can be enhanced by layering different window treatments,” Petrie says. Pairing a set of textured blinds with sheer curtains or thick drapes can be a great way to make your space more functional—and more dynamic. And if you’ve already bought a matching furniture set, you still have options.

Create an illusion of larger spaces

Their expertise can also help you avoid painting pitfalls like unwelcome effects of light (or lack thereof) on the hue, as well as keep the paint from clashing with existing furnishings and fixtures. “Clients call me to expand on what they want,” says Amy Krane, founder of Amy Krane Color. When she’s faced with a request for a green kitchen, she doesn’t present every verdant hue. Instead, Krane goes through the fan deck, settling on six to 10 maybes. She shares her notes and mails paper samples to clients who then purchase paint on their own.

Determine Your Interior Designing Style

Dark colors can be intimidating to decorate with, but they can add serious drama to a space. Lighting is a necessity in any home, and if you stock up on statement-making options, you can make it a must-have and a nice-to-have. Alice Chiu, the principal designer at Miss Alice Designs, recommends snagging at least one show-stopping fixture for your home. 'We love to create one of a kind pieces which make a room completely individual, from hand-painted murals to embellished cushions and headboards,' says Kit Kemp. ‘Aged brass as a finish is big news in the world of interiors, but you don’t need to buy new fittings. We work with craftsmen and artisans, including Masterfix Solutions, who transform the surface appearance of existing light fittings to an exquisite finish,’ says Roselind Wilson.

Go bold in the kitchen

To impress your guests, decorate your walls with wallpapers that have attractive and unusual patterns, color, and designs. You can opt for abstracted basic forms that are nature inspired or other colorful designs that will turn your walls into a beautiful work of art. Decorilla emerged in 2010 when a group of passionate interior designers envisioned a platform to connect clients with top-notch design expertise. Since its inception, Decorilla has collaborated with thousands of professional designers who have transformed countless homes and commercial spaces worldwide. Home stagers can be less expensive than a full-service interior decorator, but still offer solid advice, especially when it comes to recommendations on furniture scale, light fixtures, or art placement. “My design clients are usually a young family who has researched decorators, but they’re not affordable,” says Kyra Frankel, designer and stager of Angle Poise Design in Brooklyn.

Scale Your Decor to Fit the Space

If you spend more than €5,000 with the furniture store, then you can redeem this cost against your purchase. Do bear in mind that recommendations will typically be based on the stock in that store – so be sure you are happy with their goods before availing of their services. Lunaria Design Studio was built as a place where creativity could run loose and enjoying life was front and center. Their mission is to help you live out your joy as well, doing what you love, impacting people and bringing more beauty into the world. They are your forever cheerleaders in both life and business, supporting you through full-scope brand and web design. Established in 2016, Hanna’s namesake firm has since served a distinct clientele including celebrity athletes, Grammy-winning musicians, Hollywood artists, tech entrepreneurs, and elite financiers.

Look for Creative Ways to Add More Natural Light

interior design advice

You can show it off subtly by carving out a section dedicated to a focal point. You’ve heard, ‘One man’s junk is another man’s fortune.’ Well, it doesn’t have to be another man’s belongings. Take the items that you have, be it old furniture, piles of wood pellets, discarded curtains, upholstery, just anything really, and repurpose it. Having pretty seating near your entrance door serves a double purpose. Aside from wowing your guests, you can use the chair while putting your shoes on or taking them off. You can have a couple of stylish chairs in complementary colors and a console on the side, or  you can place a beautiful couch or bench.

interior design advice

Furniture pieces such as coffee tables, dining tables, headboards, etc. made of natural wood add a rustic design and minimalist look, making the room feel more inviting. With clean-cut designs on these pieces, you can also invoke a contemporary room design. Plants are a great way to make your home to stand out, whether outside or inside. If you want your interior design to stand out, decorate your home interiors with large plants.

Paint your cabinets, stock up on vibrant glassware, or take a risk on a bold backsplash. She adds that this is a particularly great choice in shorter rooms because the consistency of color will draw the eye upward—creating the illusion of more space.

Add a fashionable influence to bedrooms

“Whether it is on cabinets or walls, this verdant shade will be everywhere.” Not sure how to determine which green is best for you? “Like many other hues, finding the right color means balancing the undertones of the green, as many read a little gray in the late evening light,” Barnes explains. Why settle for regular wallpaper when you can install something textural instead? Whether you’re drawn to florals, snakeskin, or something in between, there’s a wall covering option for you.

Think of mossy green as a moody neutral per this Maestri Studio kitchen project. Wake up a white kitchen with a bright nook, as done by Hilary Matt Interiors. Make your space into a jewel box, like this gem of a room from JL design.

Choices of artwork can be important for a room, but equally consider how you display it. A common mistake people make is hanging a chandelier too high or close to the ceiling. Drop it low enough that it brings light into the room and is noticed. If you hang it above a table, make sure that when you sit up from the table, your or any taller guests cannot knock into it.

'When considering a modern interior, sharp lines, smooth surfaces and open spaces spring to mind. While this is often the case, this doesn’t mean that everything in the home needs to be new. For instance, an antique commode can be converted into a smart vanity with a washbasin, bringing character to what might otherwise be a fairly stark bathroom. Additionally, reupholstering antique dining chairs or a sofa in a fresh or fun fabric is an excellent way to incorporate antiques into a contemporary space, balancing the old and the new. For instance, dress a bedroom with inexpensive plain fabrics but add a colorful bedspread and some tasseled cushions. They’re so adaptable and will instantly create a strong look,’ says Penny Morrison.

12 Expert Landscaping Ideas for the Front of the House

front landscape design

Cascading petunia, vinca, and asparagus fern look lovely hanging over a bed's edges. Leave some edges clear, though, for sit-down gardening or just sitting down. To add beauty and additional shade to a front yard, carefully situate accent trees between the street and the house. Accent trees make such a lasting impression that you'll find you identify certain homes by the dogwood or Japanese maple in the front yard. When selecting accent—also called specimen or ornamental—trees, use reliable native types with good habits and few pest problems. It depends on the look you’re after and how you want to utilize the space.

PLANNING YOUR FRONT YARD GARDEN

The walkway is also a great place for solar and LED lights to dimly light your path at night and impress onlookers. Our DIY Pathway guide provides all the direction you need to create a pathway you can be proud of. A minimalistic or simple front yard fits well with a contemporary house. Grow plants with spiky leaves or sculptural forms and use concrete or other modern-looking containers. Instead of lantern-shaped lights along a walkway, add a glow with outdoor rope lights or choose sleek mounted lighting for a wall.

Create a talking point by adding a water feature to your front yard

You can make your house the focus by planting a few trees or shrubs on each side of your walkway. Grow flowers under them and echo their colors in planters beside your entrance. Line the walkway to your front entrance with landscape lighting or low-growing liriope or mondo grass, sometimes called monkey grass.

Arizonian landscapes often use desert elements like agaves and yuccas. To mimic the area's natural arroyos, complete the look with a dry stream bed utilizing larger stones and pebbles. For a Southwestern flair, use architectural elements like wrought iron or terra cotta. Make the front of your home with these easy ideas and create a welcoming and enjoyable space. It is also important that you know how to plant climbing roses and how to prune climbing roses to ensure you have a stupendous display. From coast to coast, discover inspiring gardens from our archives.

Incorporate materials that bring a touch of industrial-chic

While water feature ideas are popular for backyards, they are often discounted when it comes to front garden design. However, the right garden fountain ideas can bring height and interest to your front yard as well as creating movement and bringing sound to the space. Consider partnering with a concentric paving design to focus the eye towards your fountain as the centerpiece of your front yard. If you are planning to totally redesign your front yard then it is important to fully research front yard landscaping ideas and curate the perfect selection for your property.

What is the most expensive part of landscaping?

Match the front yard landscape to suit the style of your home. For instance, use low-growing shrubs, grasses and flowering plants to repeat the horizontal lines of a ranch-style house. Some low growing plants such as dwarf trees, small conifer trees and ground cover look amazing in front of ranch style homes. Choosing evergreen will ensure that you enjoy the lush green landscape throughout the year. It’s also a good idea to plant smaller plants in the front of flowerbeds and taller ones in back to create depth and dimension.

Recessed lighting in paving is another option for nighttime drama – as are strip lights neatly installed on the risers of any front yard steps. If your house needs or will adapt to your desire for a special theme garden like colonial, cottage, Asian, or Mediterranean, the look must begin in the front yard. Themes are successful only if you unify all the garden aspects carefully. Be sure knockers and bells are easy to find, at a convenient height, and not inaccessible behind a locked screen door.

Use the plants with the proper ultimate spread and an attractive year-round appearance. The old rule that the front yard is for the public and the backyard is for fun and family is sometimes better broken. On the south side, where tender plants and fruit can best survive the cold?

How to Build a Staircase

design stairs

Depending on your need, staircase slopes range from 30 to 50 degrees. At least two stringers are used in every straight staircase run, one on each side. The stair riser is the vertical board that runs from the top of one tread to the bottom of the one above it. A riser closes up the treads for a cleaner look and for improved safety. This simple staircase includes white-painted beaded-board paneling. The wall covering extends onto a doorway, disguising the basement entrance.

Floating Steps

A glass railing on the other side of the staircase allows light to filter throughout the area;  Mark Odom Studio added a conversation area below. Painted balusters are an easy, do-it-yourself way to add color to a white stairwell. Here, Will Taylor of Bright Bazaar used shades of blue and gave the design a dynamic layout by pairing two spindles in the same hue on adjacent treads (instead of on the same level). Designer Kelly Hoppen mimicked the gentle curve of this open staircase with a modern pendant light hanging above the two-story foyer. The modern black railing and light wood steps are mirrored along the second-floor balcony and in the home's exposed beams.

An All-In-One Railing

A mural in subtle shades of green, blue, and tan decorates this stairwell by J. The detailed metal balusters and wooden railing stand out against the expansive artwork, while the cream-colored steps blend into the landscape. “Spiral staircases are an architectural marvel, perfect for limited spaces, and they add a distinct character to any home,” shares Hintlian. “These staircases are cost-effective in terms of the space utilized versus the area needed for other stairs types.” she adds. The triangular steps along the turn make winder stairs a more attractive option in the eyes of many homeowners, adding a modern touch to a living space.

If you’re building a staircase for a tall deck, it's best to break up the staircase with an intermediate landing after about seven or eight steps. From a technical standpoint, there's nothing particularly difficult about building stairs for a deck, porch, or shed. Anyone with basic carpentry skills can make the necessary cuts and assemble the parts. And yet, stair building is arguably the most challenging task do-it-yourselfers will ever attempt. When designing his Manhattan apartment, the proflific trendsetter, Guido Palau, turned to Mylen Stairs to bring a unique, one-of-kind spiral staircase.

These come not only from their physical characteristics but also the particular contexts of their locations. Stairs which are standing totally freely in a room have a natural attraction for the eye. But if you combine that with an extraordinary design and use materials processed in very high quality then you gain a real eye-catcher.

Step 1: Calculate Rise and Run

Learn the lingo below to talk the talk with contractors and design pros alike. Whether you're lucky enough to have a beautiful grand staircase in your home or not, you can easily dress up your staircase to elevate the design in your home. From a few simple touches to ideas on how to use the space underneath your staircase, we share our favorite ideas to help elevate your home's design. This straight staircase is nestled against an exposed brick wall that provides warmth, character, and texture. Thanks to a floor-to-ceiling metal rod guardrail, the brick wall is a stunning backdrop to the living room.

In order to get more light into the home, they had to design several features for this staircase area by One House Green. They located the stairs along the south, glass railing, skylights, and windows in the stairwell. They also used LED strip lighting within the carbonized bamboo stairs, landing, and floors.

What Are the Typical Dimensions of a Staircase?

This design alternates an organic print with a geometric stripe to repeat the mix of modern and traditional seen elsewhere in the hallway. Arcways Custom Spiral Stairs – or circular stairs as they are sometimes called – offer incredible spatial efficiency without sacrificing design impact. With Arcway’s signature style and attention to detail, spiral stairs are an eye-catching and breathtaking addition to any architectural space. Easystair allows you to design straight staircases, quarter-turns, double quarter-turns, half-turns and spiral staircases. Then, lay the square on the 2 x 12 with the gauges pressed against the board's edge and mark the tread and riser. Slide the square down, align it with the previously drawn notch, and draw the next one.

PJCArchitecture removed the walls that enclosed this spiral staircase and finished it in a rich black with a slim, understated railing. Opening up the shape turned the staircase into a dramatic first impression in the entryway. As you can likely imagine, double staircases take up more space than single versions. Because you are essentially building two separate staircases, a double staircase will cost more to build than other more traditional options. “Bifurcated stairs start with a wider, single flight at the bottom, which then splits into two narrower flights at a landing. This design can be breathtaking but requires substantial space and budget, making it suitable mostly for larger, high-end projects,” Hintlian notes.

You can learn a lot about history by looking around an older house. Charming features like phone niches reveal a lot about the people and technology of bygone days. If you’ve ever inspected an older staircase, you may have noticed details like brass corner protectors or metal stair rods. Read on to take a closer look at these features, discover their purpose and find staircase ideas for your next DIY project. Stair stringers for decks and porches are almost always made of weather-resistant pressure-treated lumber. A wall of square slats provides definition between spaces on the ground floor and a safe way to ascend the stairs.

“Proper measurements are key to finding the right fit,” Bigach adds. With such an elevated place within the home, staircases demand just as much decorative thought and polish as the rest of the house. Staircases, for example, are perfect places for trendy wallpaper or a splash of unexpected color. Unique lighting, an artsy collection, and eye-catching runners are other excellent ways to bring life to a staircase. Finally, hand-forged iron or bespoke fretwork banisters can transform steps into sculptural works of art.

Pj’s Pancake House - Princeton, NJ

Luckily for the breakfast lovers of Los Angeles, the city is full of some pretty outstanding pancake varieties. Drive past this Inglewood institution, and find hoards of locals trying to get a fix of South LA food staples. It’s best to avoid the place on Sundays after church, when the 1982-born restaurant is especially swarmed with hungry diners looking to get their hands on the butter-laden flapjacks. There’s nothing quite like the quaint beach bungalow-turned pancake house Uncle Bill’s.

Western Omelet

The Saturday and Sunday morning lines are no joke, but is worth the wait after one bite of these cakey monstrosities. If it’s classic buttermilk stacks on the radar, old school diners like The Original Pantry fit the bill, and with 24-hour service at that. The City of Angels is also home to some outrageously decadent versions, most notably from West Hollywood’s iconic The Griddle. There’s nothing quite like a leisurely morning with a heaping stack of flapjacks and all the nostalgia that comes with it.

That homey feel comes across in the pancakes, the no-nonsense buttermilk flapjacks that come golden and relatively thick. Nicely crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside with conspicuous buttermilk flavor, these are pancakes prepared just right. It doesn’t hurt that they are served with a side of salted clarified butter that facilitates a solid drenching. The menu has nearly twenty varieties of cardiac arrest-inducing options, from the Black Magic filled with crushed Oreos to the Saturday Morning Fever with Bailey’s and Kahlua batter.

Silver Dollar Pancakes

During weekend brunch at West Hollywood’s hit charmer, Tesse, order chef Raphael Francois and pastry chef Sally Camacho Mueller’s Limoncello pancakes. The pair combined the Italian lemon liqueur with marscapone, maple syrup, and chantilly cream. The family-owned S&W Country Diner operates in Downtown Culver City, and is completely retro with the 1950s-esque counters, decor, and longtime cash-only policy. Four fluffy platter-sized cakes come in one stack, and it might be best to share unless truly hungry. This down and dirty family-run restaurant has been serving West LA since 1982.

PJs Pancake House in Lawrenceville, NJ, is a breakfast, lunch and dinner beacon for both locals and travelers, thanks to its prime location on Rt 1 near Rt 95. Just a short hop away from the bustling Quakerbridge Mall and a plethora of shopping destinations, this establishment offers the perfect respite for shoppers seeking a delicious meal or a quick bite. Its inviting ambiance and renowned menu, featuring a delightful array of pancakes and other comfort foods, make it a favored spot in the area. The original PJs Pancake House, located in the heart of Princeton, NJ, is a beloved local institution that has been serving the community since 1961. Originally opened as a cozy spot for mouth-watering pancakes, it quickly became a favorite gathering place for both locals and visitors.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken

The Manhattan Beach mainstay is quite the local hangout, with serious weekend lines. Long considered one of the best pancakes in town, the incredible griddle produces some of the crispiest, fluffiest pancakes you’ve ever tried.

There’s not much that needs to be said about these flapjacks – eating them at the restaurant’s worn counter just feels right. Atrium’s creative duo chef Hunter Pritchett and pastry chef Gregory Baumgartner experimented and developed a platter of buckwheat banana pancakes with french butter and maple syrup. It’s a solid addition for everyone, even those adhering to a gluten-free diet. The once-beloved breakfast spot moved to a more expansive location in Hollywood, but later reopened a breakfast spot right back in its original Santa Monica Boulevard address. But the cult favorite oatmeal griddle cakes remain, still slathered in maple cinnamon butter, and as delicious as ever.

Loaded with more butter than one really wants to think about, Jon & Vinny’s has made itself a serious contender for best pancakes in LA. They’re as straightforward as they get with light, fluffy buttermilk pancakes served with the usual accoutrements of maple syrup, a generous helping of salted butter and berries. Our team is focused on creating memorable experiences for our guests.

A destination in itself, the Schooner has an unrivaled waterfront ambiance and is the perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail before dinner while watching yachts pass by.

Come and enjoy an atmosphere unparalleled almost anywhere! During most months, casual dockside dining is an incomparable way to enjoy both the food and extraordinary waterfront view. Watch the commercial fleet at work while enjoying freshly cooked seafood from the Take-Out, which is available to be eaten dockside or taken home, or from The Raw Bar which has both an indoor bar & dining room and its own individual menu.

On a recent Wednesday afternoon, the dining room was nearly full when Lam’s daughter, Sophia Lau, arrived with her newborn. “His family was rich,” says Lam, “but my family, no.” So she and her mother remained in Phnom Penh, where in April 1975 they were among the millions of residents ousted from their homes by the Khmer Rouge and marched at gunpoint into the jungle. It was a 10-day walk that marked the beginning of a brutal genocide, during which nearly a quarter of Cambodia’s population would succumb to starvation and violence under Pol Pot’s Maoist regime. Both Lam and Hua were born in Cambodia to Chiu Chow families with roots in China’s Guangdong province. Hua remembers eating prawns prepared similar to the lobsters at Newport as a boy in Phnom Penh, where he lived until 1970, when he and his family fled to Hong Kong to escape an escalating civil war.

Our fresh fish market receives deliveries seven days a week, ensuring that we have the highest-quality, freshest selection around! We support the local fishing industry by purchasing directly from the Long Island Sound commercial fisherman and diggers whenever available. Romaine hearts tossed in creamy Caesar dressing topped with shaved parmesan cheese, fresh black pepper and seasoned croutons.

Handicapped stickered vehicles can park for free anywhere in the village without having to visit a meter. That raw bar, which is an all-new concept for PJ Lobster House, will be serving shellfish plucked from the local waters with more types coming soon, said Luciano. And for those that like seeing lobsters, you will be able to see tanks in that market that will hold up to 1,500 pounds worth.

SEAFOOD RESTAURANT & FISH MARKET IN PORT JEFFERSON, NY ESTABLISHED 1995

She was so good at selling Hua’s recipes that the two opened their own restaurant, borrowing money from friends to start the original Newport Seafood in Santa Ana, not far from the Newport fish market where they shopped for seafood every morning. It was there in Orange County that Hua perfected Newport’s signature dishes — the house special lobster, clams with basil and bo luc lac, cubes of filet mignon dredged in enough black pepper to merit a red chile icon next to its name on Newport’s menu. PJ Lobster House in Port Jefferson, New York, is a seafood restaurant that also doubles as a fresh fish market to the local community. Diners who come in for a meal enjoy the cozy, casual atmosphere, perfect for digging into a plate of oysters on the half shell. We’re more than a seafood restaurant, we also feature an onsite fresh fish market.

It was the only Chinese restaurant in a town of 15,000 where the main attraction was the Corn Palace — a shrine to local agriculture with outsize murals of Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson made entirely of corn husks. Free parking is available 7 days a week in the Barnum parking lot, on Barnum Ave, and is a short walk to our restaurant. There is something for everyone with a menu including seafood, steaks, burgers, chicken and pasta. Full bar available and a great place to catch your favorite sports games. On Sunday, Nov. 15, was the restaurant’s last day operating from 1 North Country Road, the location the seafood eatery and fish market have operated from since 1995.

In addition to our regular menu, sushi is served Wednesday - Sunday. For starters, there will now be three different entrances — instead of one — to the seafood eatery. One is through the Habor Square Mall, the other by the Meadow Lot, and, lastly, on the southside of the building through PJ Lobster House’s separate fish market. This week, the GreaterPortJeff team swung by the seafood restaurant and seafood market for a photo tour. Take-Out orders will be limited on holidays & must be placed in advance.

Tables seat eight, 10 and 12 — it’s a place where people gather to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, but Lam never stops to commemorate the restaurant’s own milestones. Newport Tan Cang still exists in Orange County, but Lam and Hua sold the restaurant in 1996 and relocated to a strip mall in San Gabriel. When the lines got too long, they expanded, first to Rowland Heights and more recently to Beverly Hills, where they opened a third location on the same block as Lawry’s the Prime Rib. The lines never subsided in San Gabriel, so they relocated to an old Marie Callender’s down the street, renovating the roomy diner with décor from Guangdong.

Reservations are required on holidays & must be placed the day before. First come first served seating is available for outdoor dining (season and weather permitting), the bar, & sushi counter areas. Lam is perched on the edge of her chair, telling this story from one of the private dining nooks at Newport Seafood on Las Tunas Boulevard in San Gabriel, one of three outposts in a family-run seafood mini-chain. She is 57, but has the energy of a teenager, and you get the sense she might leap into action at any minute, like a coiled spring.

Courses Build School

yestermorrow design

Yestermorrow is a leader in Design/Build education in no small part thanks to the thousands of incredible individuals who have graced our campus. And yet, by not addressing systemic barriers to attending our programs, we have missed out on the creativity and brilliance of folks who have been targeted by the systems of oppression. That is why Yestermorrow is committed to intentionally centering, honoring, and integrating the presence and knowledge of Black, Indigenous, and all People of Color, and individuals from other marginalized communities. We believe that our mission to “inspire people to create a better, more sustainable world” is not possible without the valuable perspectives, lived experiences, energy, and resilience that these communities carry.

Book the perfect creative space in Los Angeles.

We’re an online platform that helps artists like you find the perfect place to work, celebrate, or show off. For instance, you can book a stunning indoor and outdoor luxe loft in Santa Monica, a renovated church with an industrial aesthetic for parties in Westlake, a 1970s hand-built geodesic dome in Topanga, and so much more. No matter what you need, we offer hundreds of locations from all over the globe. For the dorm, students designed these ingenious little bunk pods, inspired by Japanese architecture and design, so each person can stand up and pull a little sliding door behind them and be alone with their belongings.

We recommend that you submit your application as early as possible. Our program is open to students of all backgrounds including current undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates from any college or university, and individuals who have no past or current collegiate affiliation. For students enrolling for credits, credits are transferred at the discretion of the student’s home institution. No previous architecture or construction experience is necessary; the only prerequisite is self-motivation. This creative process offers students unique insight into the oftentimes disparate worlds of the architect and the builder. Architects are routinely trained without any building experience that might inform their designs, and builders are trained to execute without a sense of the overarching purpose or design of the project.

The UMass Architecture + Design program is New England’s only public accredited architecture degree. Nowhere else can liberal arts students get this level of intensive, hands-on instruction for college credit from professional designers and builders who are leaders in the field. There is an undeniable history of racism, sexism and colonization that permeates the social structures we all live and work in today.

Started in 2011, the Design/Build Semester is an ongoing partnership between Yestermorrow Design/Build School (Waitsfield, VT) and UMass Amherst’s Department of Architecture (Amherst, MA). Past projects have included back country cabins, tiny houses, and site-built homes. Each year is a unique experience as it largely driven by the project. Students receive instruction in design, assembly and detailing, and building performance while exploring group process, definitions of sustainability, and relevant contexts in.
